Chamber recognizes Evers & Ollie coffee shop with ribbon cutting

FLUSHING — As a college student, Dr. Nicole Wax spent many hours in coffee shops studying for exams and writing assignments.

Now, as a practicing orthodontist, she’s started her own coffee shop business geared toward giving customers an inviting space to study, mingle and enjoy a cup of java.

Evers & Ollie, located on 124 S. Cherry Street in downtown Flushing, held a ribbon cutting with the Flushing Area Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 29. The coffee shop, which opened last year, is in the same building as Wax’s orthodontic practice and features a drive-up window and indoor seating.

Wax, who also has orthodontics offices in Linden and Highland, said her inspiration for Evers & Ollie stemmed from all the “coffee hour” sessions she spent while in college.

“I would be aware of the coffee shops I liked better than others and observing which ones were welcoming, had the best coffee, smelled good and kept me motivated to study,” she said. “Fifteen years later, I’m an orthodontist and have my practices, but that idea and desire to have a coffee shop was still looming around.”

Evers & Ollie is named after Wax’s eight-year-old son Oliver and daughter Everly, who’s almost three. Wax said her kids are proud of the store and enjoy making their own special drinks when they come up to Flushing.

Coffee served by Evers & Ollie is locally sourced from Rootless Brewing Company in Flint. The shop also serves up lattes, frappes, fruit smoothies with no added sugar, slushies, French and Italian sodas, paninis, bagels and healthy snack packs for kids.

Additionally, the store offers a clothing boutique, along with jewelry, home goods and coffee mugs.

“We encourage people to stay, have conversations and get their work done here,” said Wax. “Our vibe is comfortable; you walk in, and you feel like you’re at home.”

Evers & Ollie is open Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
