Sheboygan Walk to End Alzheimer's 2023 is Sept. 23 at Evergreen Park

SHEBOYGAN - The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Sheboygan County residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Sept. 23 at Evergreen Park, 3000 Calumet Drive, Sheboygan.

The event opens at 8:30 a.m. with the opening ceremony at 9:40 a.m. immediately followed by the walk at 10 a.m.

Emcee for the walk will be long-time volunteer Bill Horsch. The Kohler Drumline be on hand to provide spirit and motivate walk participants. And Chuck Butler, a member of the dementia crisis task force of Sheboygan County and the president of Dementia Innovations, will sing the national anthem.

Lisa Hurley, caregiver and dementia care specialist at the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Sheboygan County, and Dana Elmzen, director of marketing and development at Sheboygan Senior Community, are co-chairs of the event.

“The Walk is so special,” Elmzen said in a news release. “It’s a place where people come to heal, connect and make the future brighter for those living with the disease. Sheboygan County is fortunate to have so many people dedicated to finding a cure.”

In this new era with Alzheimer’s treatments advancing, walkers are fighting for a different future for families facing Alzheimer’s and other dementia. They walk in honor of loved ones impacted by the disease and future generations.

The walk begins with a Promise Garden ceremony in which walkers hold a colored flower representing their personal connection to the cause. They may have lost someone (purple), be fighting the disease (blue), be a caregiver (yellow) or be an advocate for the cause (orange).

Craig Coshun, sportscaster covering the Brewers and the Bucks, will be the honorary chairman for the 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s supporting all Wisconsin walks. He lost his mother to Alzheimer’s and is active in the Sportscasters Against Alzheimer’s initiative.

Coastal Young Professionals Network and Sheboygan County Chamber are gearing up for the annual OktoberFeast fundraiser. The event will run 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 12 at The American Club and is open to the public, ages 21 and older.

Admission includes food sampling from all participating restaurants. Attendees can cast a vote for favorite restaurant and the restaurant with the most votes will be announced as “Best of OktoberFeast.”

Bucket raffles will also be included along with a cash bar and live music from Tonic Roots.

Sheboygan’s Weill Center for the Performing Arts has announced its board of directors for 2023-24.

Other members of the Weill Center board include David Gallianetti, director of external relations at Lakeland University; Jeff Madson, vice president of human resources at Vollrath Company; Jeff Frieders, operations manager at Midwest Communications; Joe Hullin, systems architect at Acuity Insurance; and Steve Woods, retired vice president of special projects division at Quasius Construction. The organization is led by Executive Director Katy Glodosky.

The Weill Center is a 1,150-seat live event venue in downtown Sheboygan. It presents a series of live performances including music, comedy, variety acts, movies and more. The theater was restored in 2001 to its original Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style and atmospheric theater, as built in 1928. Plymouth Arts Center is inviting Midwest artists to register for its annual Paint the Towns in Fall Color, en Plein Air (outdoor painting) competition and exhibition.

Painting days are Oct. 12-19 in Plymouth, Greenbush and Glenbeulah, within a boundary map provided.

Artists will be invited to participate in a special paint weekend on the grounds of Road America as well.

Artists are encouraged to register in advance as the first 45 artists to register will be accepted. Fee is $45 if the registration form is received before Oct. 5 and $50 if completed after Oct. 5. The prospectus/guidelines and registration form are online at plymoutharts.org.

A public reception, awards ceremony and silent auction will be held at the Plymouth Arts Center, 520 E. Mill St. in downtown Plymouth, on Oct. 20. Cash awards totaling $3,000 along with non-cash merit awards will be presented during the ceremony. The event is coordinated by artist Dan Rizzi of Plymouth.

The public is invited to view and bid on the “Paint the Towns” paintings at a reception and silent auction from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 20. This is a free-admission reception with live music and complimentary appetizers and desserts.

After the reception and silent auction, unsold works will remain in the Arts Center’s Gallery 110 North through Nov. 17 and be for sale at a “buy it now” retail price. All proceeds benefit Plymouth Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Road America, N7390 State 67, Plymouth, will mark the return of the Ferrari Challenge Sept. 9-10.

Daily tickets are $40 at the gate or $30 in advance, or a special event pass is $70 at the gate or $50 in advance and covers both days. Gates will open at 7 a.m. both Sept. 9 and 10.

The night of Sept. 9, there will be a fireworks show at dusk. Arrive at Gate 4 at 7 p.m. to secure as spot, as parking is limited. Cost is $25 per carload.
